DIY District,
authentic Japanese fabrics from Kyoto

For over 12 years, DIY District has been driven by one passion: making the richness of Japanese textiles accessible to creators worldwide. What started in France eventually led us to Kyoto in 2022, where we now live at the very heart of this centuries-old tradition, steps from the workshops and artisans behind the finest Japanese fabrics.

Authentic Japanese fabric, handpicked in Kyoto

At DIY District, every Japanese fabric in our collection is selected directly from manufacturers and artisans from Kyoto to Osaka and everywhere in Japan. No European or American middlemen, our premium cottons travel straight from the Japanese workshop to your doorstep, handled with care every step of the way.

Our collection features Japanese cotton fabric by the yard, printed with traditional and modern patterns. Browse timeless classics like Asanoha (hemp leaf), Seigaiha (ocean waves), delicate Sakura blossoms, or dramatic Mount Fuji and crane ukiyo-e prints. You’ll also find contemporary designs: our adorable neko (cat) prints and other kawaii designs, manga fabrics (like Demon Slayer), bold geometric patterns, and the organic cotton creations of designer Nani Iro.

We carry several types of Japanese cotton: lightweight printed cotton (perfect for garments and accessories), textured dobby weave, and luxurious silk brocade for statement pieces. All our fabrics are sold by the meter, starting from 50 cm (each product page includes a yard conversion tool).

Super fast shipping (in spite of having an ocean and a continent to cross)! The lovely fragrance of the clove sachets wafting out of the package as I opened it gave the moment an extra memorable and special atmosphere, something much more precious than just opening a plastic bag. My kimono were all beautiful choices, varied from each other in color and print that each was a delightful surprise! All were delicately wrapped with extra surprises, and a pretty block-print style card of customer appreciation. If someone in your life appreciates the art of vintage kimono and surprises, this would be absolutely the perfect gift!

The fabric far exceeded my expectations with its beautiful pattern and smooth hand feel. Comfortably medium weight, perfect for clothes making projects. On a side note, the seller packed everything in such a careful and neat manner that I actually felt guilty unwrapping the package because it was so nicely done :)

Came much quicker than I expected. The fabric is lovely and just the right color. The weave is slightly looser than I expected but it will work well in the quilt I plan to make.

Answers to your questions

  • What is Japanese fabric?

Japanese fabric refers to textiles manufactured in Japan, typically using high-quality cotton with traditional or contemporary printed patterns. The most common types include printed cotton (ideal for sewing and quilting), dobby weave (textured), double gauze (soft and lightweight), and silk brocade (luxurious, used for kimonos and decor). What sets Japanese fabric apart is the precision of the printing, the quality of the cotton, and the rich heritage of patterns passed down through centuries of textile tradition.

  • What do Japanese fabric patterns mean?

Each Japanese pattern carries cultural significance. Asanoha (hemp leaf) symbolizes growth and good health. Seigaiha (ocean waves) represents calm seas and good fortune. Sakura (cherry blossoms) evoke fleeting beauty and renewal. Tsuru (cranes) are a symbol of longevity. Kanoko (deer spots) recalls the shibori tie-dye technique. Choosing a specific pattern adds a meaningful cultural dimension to your creative project.

  • What can I make with Japanese fabric?

Japanese cotton fabric is incredibly versatile. Popular projects include Japanese knot bags, furoshiki wrapping cloths, pouches, pencil cases, journal covers, table runners, cushion covers, lightweight garments, modern kimonos, patchwork quilts, and more. We offer a free pie bag pattern and tutorial and a knot bag sewing guide in our articles section.

  • Is Japanese fabric good for quilting?

Japanese cotton is highly prized by quilters worldwide for its superior print quality, consistent weave, and excellent color fastness. The standard width of 110 cm (approximately 44 inches) works perfectly for quilting projects. Our printed cottons cut cleanly, sew precisely, and hold their shape through repeated washing – making them ideal for both hand and machine quilting.

  • Why is Japanese fabric more expensive than regular fabric?

Japanese fabric is produced in Japan using premium cotton and more precise printing techniques than standard industrial fabrics. The fine detail of the patterns, color durability through washing, and weave density justify the price difference. At DIY District, we eliminate middlemen by selecting directly in Kyoto, allowing us to offer competitive prices for authentic Japanese fabric shipped straight from the source.

  • What types of Japanese cotton fabric do you carry?

We carry several types of Japanese cotton: lightweight printed cotton (our most popular, perfect for sewing and quilting), textured dobby weave, and designs from renowned artists like Nani Iro in organic cotton. We also offer silk brocade fabrics for statement pieces and traditional kimonos. Our fabrics come from trusted Japanese manufacturers including Kobayashi, Cosmo, Sevenberry, Quilt Gate and more, all handpicked by our team in Kyoto.

  • Can I buy Japanese fabric by the yard?

Yes, all our fabrics are sold by the meter (starting from 50 cm minimum). The standard width is 110 cm (approximately 44 inches) for printed Japanese cotton. Each product page includes a measurement conversion tool to help you calculate the exact amount needed for your project.

  • Do you ship to the United States?

Yes, we ship worldwide directly from Kyoto, Japan via FedEx and Japan Post. Shipping to the US is free on orders over $164. Delivery typically takes 3-7 business days.

We handle all customs documentation: duties and taxes are included for both European customers (IOSS) and US customers (DDP), so there are no surprises at delivery.

  • How do payment and shipping work?

We ship directly from Kyoto via FedEx, DHL, and Japan Post. Free shipping on orders over $138 to Europe and Canada, $164 to the US, $126 Australia, and New Zealand.

We accept credit cards (Stripe), PayPal, Google Pay, and Apple Pay for secure transactions.

  • How do you handle out-of-stock items?

Due to the popularity of certain fabrics, some items may temporarily sell out. Thanks to our close proximity to our suppliers in Kyoto, we can restock many models quickly. If a fabric you love is currently unavailable, please contact us – we can often let you know about future availability.

  • Can I buy Japanese fabric in Kyoto or online?

Yes! DIY District ships worldwide from Kyoto, and you can also visit our shop in person right in the heart of the city, in the Nakagyō-ku district (中京区), a short walk from Nishiki Market and Rokkaku-dō temple.
